Kerapeat is the trade name of a set of coirpith based organic manures produced and marketed by the KERALA ORGANIC MANURES, Perinad (P O), Kollam, Pin 691 601.
Coconut husk is the largest byproduct of coconut from which the coir fibre, the raw material for coir industry is extracted. Coirpith, a spongy material that binds the coconut fibre in the husk, generated in large quantities as waste and dumped in the surroundings of the fibre extraction units in the form of huge hillocks. It occupies large land space causing pollution problems. Normally 1 tonne coir pith is produced from every 10,000 nos of husks used in coir industry.
Kerala Organic Manures is converting the coir pith to organic manure called C-pom using a technology from Coir board. Here the highly lignocellulosic coir pith is bio-degraded to organic manure by using microbes and we have adopted several new technologies from various research institutes in using microbes. Various combinations of organic manures are produced by adding other organic materials like Neem cake, Bone meal,certain bio-controlagents like Pseudomonas, Trichoderma etc and essential micro nutrients. Now Kerala Organic Manures & Fertilizers Company is the largest approved unit of Coir board. There are products namely Kerapeat C-pom, Kerapeat Compost, Kerapeat Supermeal, Kerapeat Growbags, Kerapeat Potting Mixture, Kerapeat Chakirippotha, Kerapeat Neem cake, Kerapeat Bone meal, Kerapeat filled growbags.
